Private residence in Big Sur, California
Big Sur is a long stretch of coastline in California along Highway 1, located about 45 minutes from Monterey and Carmel. It's an amazing place to hike and relax, and it features many of the things we love so much about nature in California — redwoods, rolling hills, beaches, and rocky coastline. The surrounding areas of Carmel, Monterey, and Carmel Valley feature world class golfing, wineries, and an excellent aquarium.
We're excited to spend a weekend with you in this beautiful, wild place!
This is a small airport that's close to Big Sur.
🌎 Here there be dragons. 🐉
There are number of hotels in the Carmel area. It's a bit more convenient to the big Bay Area airports, and potentially cheaper than staying in Big Sur.

On Sunday morning, join us for a casual hangout on the beach with some breakfast treats.
Airbnbs are not allowed in Big Sur proper, so Notley's Landing is about as close as you can get. Find a group and book early!

An epic bridge. We dare you to not hum "Cold Little Heart" by Michael Kiwanuka (i.e., the theme song from Big Little Lies) while driving over it.
We have a room block here, and we'll hold a welcome event on the patio on Friday night. Pro tip: the cottages can comfortably sleep two couples if you want to share! 🙌
We've passed the point where we can guarantee availability, but there still may be rooms available!

Big. Cheapest, probably.
2 hour drive to Carmel, 3 to the wedding venue.
Less big. Lots of Southwest.
Basically the same distance away from wedding-related things as SFO.
Smaller.
1½ hours to Carmel, 2½ to the venue.
Big Sur doesn't have much lodging and fills up very quickly (it can book up to a year in advance!). Try to book as early as possible. If you're booking a hotel in Big Sur that's not Big Sur Lodge (our room block), don't tell them you're coming for a wedding!
We will provide transportation between Carmel and the venue on Saturday. That means if you're staying anywhere in between (e.g., Big Sur Lodge, camping, airbnb in Notley's Landing or Carmel) there will be a shuttle! Just let us know where you're staying.
The amount of protected land in Big Sur means camping opportunities abound! We have a group campsite reserved at Santa Lucia campground. Let us know if you're interested in staying there!
The venue is very close to the highly rated luxury resorts Ventana and Post Ranch Inn. They're probably pretty nice.
From 6-9:30 PM, join us for a welcome reception with dinner and drinks at the Big Sur Lodge.
Arrive at venue around 3 PM via shuttle. Drinks, dinner, and dancing to follow the ceremony.
Cocktail attire/semi-formal — but it's all outdoors so unless you want to aerate the grass, skip the stilettos.
Get some fresh air before the trip home by joining us at Garrapata State Park Beach for some brunch snacks.
Amy and Steve live together in SF1 after spending 4 years in the Bay Area living with friends (shout out to Dab, Jujissa, Danielle, and Bay Area rent). Amy and Steve still work doing whatever it is that they do on computers. In their spare time, they enjoy many inefficent forms of transportation including city walks, mountain hikes, climbing, and snowboarding.
You made it all the way here?! We hope that means you’re coming!
1. Well, by the time you're reading this, Amy will be in Pittsburgh for a post-doc, but let's pretend.
By the time they get married, Amy and Steve will have been dating for 8(!) years. Around year 6, they decided to get engaged. Amy said NO PROPOSAL (not very into surprises). So they settled on making it official on a trip to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.
On this trip, they decided to get engaged at the prettiest place they saw. Of course, you can’t really decide that until you’ve seen all of the places. This led to a lot of “how about here? (takes picture)... but what about the next hike?”, “are we engaged now? (takes picture)... not sure” (results pictured 😁). At the end of the trip, Steve said “I guess we should probably call our parents?” And here we are explaining our story on our wedding website, gotta have the engagement story.
Amy and Steve met in 2011 on a lab retreat in Bodega Bay. Before the retreat Steve had asked a question at one of Amy’s talks. Amy saw Steve’s Williams sweatshirt and thought, “Is that a high school?” (it isn’t).
During the retreat, Amy had the flu (the one time) but she went (not recommended) and they hung out anyway. Steve also found his thesis topic here (productive!). After the retreat, Steve asked Amy out via text and Amy didn’t respond so Steve thought she didn’t like him but it turns out this is normal Amy behavior (Amy says sorry). Also, Amy was climbing (foreshadowing) but eventually responded. They went to Ici (RIP) and saw 50/50 (B+ date movie).
